LATELY : STUDIO SNAPS

Snaps of some projects; client work, shooting my first ever wholesale catalog, and miscellaneous painting for NSS.  Also, the last few photos I took of my home office before I started to pack up everything to move into my new studio space.  It's taken awhile to finish but I can't wait to get in there! And also to share the crazy before and after photos.  So much has been going on lately with the growing of this business, I've been wanting to update more but time gets away from me as I have been painting as much as possible to finish up my line for NSS.  Once I make this move into my new studio and finish up my catalog I will have lots of exciting things to share!

I am doing a pop-up shop with my friends Camilyn Beth and Influence Style to benefit Selah Freedom this evening. Local friends (Bradenton/Sarasota) please stop by!

Happy Weekend!

HAPPY LONG WEEKEND

Thank goodness for Friday. I hope you all enjoy this long weekend, I know I'm looking forward to relaxing and maybe working on some fun personal projects.  I've been paining so many new things lately, things that just inspire me and that I've been wanting to try.  I plan to start adding some to the shop soon, like this cacti and some of the other florals I've posted on instagram. I found some vintage botanical books at an estate sale last week and have been using them for inspiration!

Happy Labor day weekend!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY ETSY SHOP!

It's my little shops birthday today! I thought I would share a few significant photos to celebrate, especially my wedding suites that have been so beautifully photographed over the years.  I owe so much to the talented people (other photographers, planners, cake artists, florists) who first got me involved in styled shoots.  When I started out I was mainly doing custom wedding work. Being published on wedding blogs brought so much exposure and new clients to my little baby shop.  I can't believe how it has grown since beginning this journey. Before I go all nostalgic rambles on you,  I am offering 20% off today ONLY.  I rarely do coupon codes but this is a special day!  The code will be valid today only and can be used for prints, cards, and notepads (sorry, custom orders and wedding suites do not apply). Enter BDAY20 at checkout to receive the discount.

Now, if anyone wants to hear a back story on the shop / beginnings of my illustration career then read on...

I opened my shop when I was still in art school in 2009.  My mom's friend told her about Etsy, that's how I originally found out it existed. As I hopeful, budding designer I immediately created my own account. I believe it was called "SKCdesigns" back then. haha. Let me back track by saying that in school I was majoring in fashion design.  It's a funny thing because what I took to immediately was fashion illustration and the production side of things (fashion shows, photoshoots, styling).  Upon taking my first textile design class I truly fell in love.  While learning Adobe Illustrator for the first time was beyond frustrating and time consuming, there was something so special about creating patterns that would be turned into fabric that would be turned into beautiful garments... We all know I love wearing/creating a good floral print, so you see how this all starts to tie together.  Pattern making (CAD, ugh) and sewing were unfortunately not my strongest suits in school, however I enjoyed making bathing suits and thought this might be calling, so I did what any hopeful would do and slapped those babies on Etsy along with a few fashion illustrations (insert a million laughing/crying emojis here).  I didn't think much of the shop then. Social media wasn't big yet (no instagram and for awhile I just refused twitter and Facebook because I thought it was weird, lol). So I didn't really have a means or know how to get much exposure (not that my bathing suit collection needed any).  As school came to an end and "real life" was upon me, I knew art/fashion was my calling but I hadn't quite pin pointed it yet.  I took a job freelancing for a major department store doing some textile designing right after graduation.  Again confirming that I loved this side of fashion and I also LOVED doing this from home, as I only had to present designs in their office every two weeks. After that I accepted a design position at smaller apparel company.  Fast forward through eight months of misery.  I knew that I was not meant to be artistically confined to a box in a cubicle while commuting and working weekends.  My mental health, social life, and creativity were suffering bad. With the support of my family (and many promises to them about how hard I planned to work) I quit that job and never looked back. I began vigorously researching and painting...planning and painting, painting, and researching some more. I started my blog (all hideous content at first, obviously) got a Facebook business page and just began posting random artwork and photography.  Jumping ahead, I helped a few friends with wedding stuff and took the time to create some suites to add to my etsy shop.  A few cards here and there. But mostly I just practiced and played with different mediums.  I doodled, sketched, lettered, and tried everything under the sun to find my voice.  Slowly but surely, through much trial and error and a few big fails, I found it. Then after that, people started noticing.  I did a couple styled shoots that got published and more brides started to find my shop. I got asked to do more styled shoots, thus sending even more brides to my shop! I felt inspired again and began painting whatever I wanted on the side.  Slowly some prints crept into the shop, I practiced with lettering quotes that inspired me, really anything that inspired me I painted. This is still true today although I've learned to curate and learned much more about branding in the past couple years so not everything I doodle makes the cut anymore.

My original intent was never to "start a business",  it was just to do what I love and be my free spirited self, while hopefully inspiring others through art and photography. I was literally livin' on a prayer and my dream for awhile. Over the past few years I've learned so much about business, patience, and dedication, all of which have helped me to turn this into my full time career. Etsy has been an amazing platform to connect me with all types of people, clients, and even press. All good things definitely take time.

"Jump. And you will find out how to unfold your wings as you fall"

Thank you for stopping by and reading this today. Your support and kind words about my work here and on instagram always mean so much to me! Enjoy the coupon code and remember, it just lasts until midnight tonight!

*Dying over this little Marc Jacobs backpack, the poppy red color is irresistible!

*I put some of my prints on sale in my shop (like the photo above), they will remain in the sale section until they sell out!
*Really fun illustrations by Cat Lee
*These gorgeous hand woven pillows, I love the color combinations
*Loving these retro style Karen Walker shades, again with these colors!
*This funky light caught my eye (for a side table perhaps?)

SUMMER DAYS

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and first official day of summer. It's sort of funny to hear that since it's been hot for months here in Florida. Sad.  My fruity print reminds me of summer days... poolside, lots of melon, bright colors, and fruit cocktails!

NATIONAL HANDWRITING DAY

I typically roll my eyes at the "national [insert random object] days" but with one like handwriting, I guess I can't help but indulge in the silliness of honoring this special day.
I looked for some quotes about handwriting to letter for this post, the only thing that really struck me were a few about it being a lost art and to think about how important handwriting used to be.  There was a day when letters were the only form of communication, I mean that's crazy (and kind of awesome).

I was then lead to think about my journey and love for lettering.  How did this happen anyways? That I have created a job partially dealing with my handwriting?  If you would have told me this years ago it would have been confusing and funny. Years ago when I was lettering my name and the names of my friends over and over on wide ruled paper instead of listening to my teacher in class… I guess that's how it started. I remember getting boxes upon boxes of new markers all the time.  I had all the fun crayola ones.  I'm not sure when I had time for this in class but I made tons of "signs" for my friends all the time.  I was constantly writing my name on a page underneath the paper I was taking notes.  I was a cheerleader and would always be asked to make signs for the games, our hallway, any school event really.  Heather would do it with me, which is just hilarious because she is designing stationery these days as well (hi Paper Please!) To make a long story short, fast forward all those years (while keeping in mind that every stage of my life that involved me being in a classroom, there was doodling involved) and "modern calligraphy" started popping up around the web.  It was funny to me that people were "selling their handwriting".  I thought, I know and love this, I could do that.  With the help of some friends passing on a few small jobs, I tried my hand in professional handwriting.  Over the past three years I've written and written and written some more. Through many trials and experiments, my writing grew into something I love.  Something I am proud of and excited to share with others.  It…is…mind-blowing!

I'm going to wrap this up with a story.  For the majority of my life grandparents have lived out of state.  For as long as I remember, my grandmother has sent me (and many others) handwritten cards and letters.  They didn't mean as much as a child but as an adult calligrapher it is truly a prize.  She still loves to write letters to this day.  She writes A LOT of letters. When I visited them early last year she made a comment about being proud of me for writing and making handwritten things.  She mentioned that schools once taught penmanship and today most people don't even know a true cursive alphabet.  This year for Christmas, she gave me a book filled with some photos, letters I had sent her as a child, and then pages upon pages of her handwriting telling her story.  Tears filled my eyes as I opened such a priceless gift.  Something I will always treasure. I can't wait to finish reading it and then visit them again to hear more stories.

Leaving people notes and sending letters is so special and personal.  I'm thankful I will always have something written from most of my family members and my close friends.  Step away from the e-mail today and send someone you love some snail mail.  Your handwriting doesn't have to be perfect, just meaningful.

SHANNON KIRSTEN X BUDDY EDITIONS

If you've yet to visit Buddy Editions, well it's time.  Buddy Editions consists of work by emerging artists all around the globe.  It has been carefully curated by the talented Katie Armour (of Neo-Traditionaist blog and co-creator of Matchbook Magazine).  Each artist has a collection of limited edition prints.  There are only 100 of each size (8"x10", 11" x 14", and 16" x 20") and only 10 large scale prints of each design!  They are exclusive to the Buddy Editions site... (So my three pieces above will only be sold there and only 100 of each size) aka get 'em while their hot!

Since being approached to be a part of this I've been beyond excited (and had to keep it under wraps for a few months).  We took inspiration from Mexican and southwestern influences to create my pieces, more specifically the festivities and colors of a dia de los muertos celebration.  I'm so thrilled with the outcome.  To be grouped with this talented bunch of artists is just amazing.  There is a bio / questionnaire where you can read some fun facts about each artist.  Buddy editions instagram is also quite inspiring.  Enjoy! xx

SOUTHAMPTON SUMMER WEDDING (FEATURED ON VOGUE.COM)

(below photographs by Daphne Youree)

One of my favorite watercolor suites from the summer was featured on Vogue.com this past week for Sophie Elgort and Eric Von Stroh's gorgeous Southampton wedding!  When designing Sophie's invitations we began with that bright, beautiful blue color inspired by a photo her father (photographer, Arthor Elgort) took of the sunset.  I drew the blue from the tones of the sky and also incorporated the local flowers they would be using; sunflowers, hydrangeas, and pink peonies.  All designing was originally done in watercolor.  We created a formal suite, escort cards with little envelopes, table numbers (that were names of special places), menus that double over as place cards, and welcome bags with an info card of the Elgort family's favorite southampton spots! I am still beyond excited to learn of the mention and read what Sophie had to say about all the details of her wedding.  In the article, you can read more about their sweet day at her family's home in Southampton.

A few instagrams around the studio from the past week or so.  I have been working hard on getting all the stuff I've posted lately printed and up in the shop!  I'm pretty excited about the greyscale botanicals and watercolor animals.  Also bringing the wreaths back since everyone seems to love them! xx
